The scene of our honeymoon- An introduction to Zakynthos

Here comes the introductory part of 'our' extremely hot (40 Celsius degrees was the average daily temperature) sunny (no clouds for almost a week, only an itsy-bitsy, hardly recognizable tiny cloudy once for a few minutes) and crazy (meaning not an average and often funny) Greek island, Zakynthos...Yeah, we think it was ours for a while...:) Interestingly, in the hotel we stayed at called Hotel Letsos (we only called it simply "lecsó", though -unfortunately- they did not serve lecsó for breakfast...) there was only one other Hungarian family. But there were tons of English, Slovakian, and Czech people.
As you might know, we spent there a week, from 13 to 20 August, and came home with great memories and lots of funny experiences about Greek people...not to mention our wonderfully tanned skin and our pre-pre-pre-intermediate knowledge of Greek language we succeeded to achieve during our stay.... this made most of the aboriginals look at us as we were Greek, too. (so as time passed, we not only had the appearance of a Greek man/woman, but also must have had a fantastic accent that made them think this:))

Altogether what I can say about Greece, our vacation and our vacation in Greece:

1. Greek food is absolutely great as long as you order lamb, salmon, sole fish, sword fish and Greek salad. We mainly ate lamb and fishes, these are the traditional stuff. Feta became one of my favourite cheeses. Greek gyros is special: it has tzatziki and chips in it. Fruits (mainly the grapes, peaches and melons) are extremely sweet and tasty, but be prepared you paprika lovers: here tomatoes are the main vegetables (or fruits or what): it is impossible to find paprika on this small island. And be aware: continental breakfast, which is the same every day, might cause a slight agony after the third day. And one more advice. If the half-drunk waiter gets to know that you are 'magyar' and happily comes to your table with small glasses of free peach schnaps (sweet peach pálinka) to drink with you: just smile and accept it. Remember: you get it free.
2. Greek people are originally crazy. Greek bus drivers are double crazy. Greek bus drivers driving without air condition are the craziest. Okay, not as much as my father, but crazy enough to be Greek.:)
3. The sea is shallow (for a while) warm (most of the time), clean and clear (mainly during non-wavy periods), shelled (until they are all collected) and SALTY (all the time). Salty not only for your mouth and tongue, but also salty for your nice little eyes.Be aware of the last fact and try to avoid ascending salty sea waves.

That was for today. To be continued soon...and yeah, pictures will come soon, too...

Still in Deutsch and other 'problems'...

Shame on me, really, that months pass one by one and I'm still not able to continue my blog-writing 'enthusiasm'...
Nowadays I'm still dealing and coping with those different German exam preparation books and heavy dictionaries (okay, that's not exactly true, usually I use the CD-ROM version of them, which is a lot faster and more practical). At least I'm half-happy now that I finally know, the written part of the exam succeeded. Now comes (on June 7, oh, why on this beautiful number...) Act 2, the oral part, which will be much more 'interesting'...khm. We'll see. I'll do whatever I can, but I can't guarantee neither original Deutsch or Austrian accent, nor imitated harsh 'hrrr' sounds...but I'm practicing, practicing...Whhharrrrrum? Because the exam itself was expensive enough to pass it...So, until June 7 I have here a bunch of topics with half-known, or even newer words to be memorized. Es ist wunderschön. Nicht wahr?
Another task of these days is to continue the wedding organization...this week we finally have found OUR ring, ordered it, and within 3 weeks it will be ready to take it home and keep it in a little box until the big day arrives. The rings are gold, white, beautiful, special, patterned, modern, glamorous, Italian, expensive....and yeah, they are not exactly the type we originally wanted, but we could not resist when noticing their special surface. (We haven't ever seen similar rings to these during our searches in other jewellery shops.) And what we wanted originally? Something, that goes with my engagement ring, has diamonds or zirkonia in it...previously, I planned to wear the wedding ring with the engagement ring side by side to each other, and well, finally this plan had to be modified. Wearing these two on one finger would be just too much. But at least I'll have rings on both of my hands...:) (By the way, did you know that though in the U.S. you wear your wedding rings on the left side, in Hungary engaged people wear it there and married couples wear it on the right?Interesting customs.)
During the past few weeks we also arranged other things, such as our honeymoon to Zakynthos, we met the pastor, I bought my jewellery, shoes, and other accessories, we bought the orange (or orangish...) ties and Zsolti's suit. So, all in all, a lot was done, still, several remained to continue with. The most urging next thing to be done is the music selection and the planning and printing of our invitation cards...
...but soon time will come and we'll send it to you.:)

Deep in Deutsch

Sorry for not posting anything since February....the main reason for my silence is that at the moment (well, this 'moment' seems to be tooo elongated...) I'm still in the midst of studying German...(the date of the exam is finally concrete, no more postponements...!)
As soon as I have time, I'll upload pictures and will continue to entertain you:)
Until this happens, check out this webpage about Scottish dance (especially because I'm in the videos, too:)):

Out of the blue

I think it's time to reappear on my blog after several weeks of deep silence...
A few days ago I've found a little journal with a few of my poems. I'll share one of my favourites with you, it has the title: 'Distances'. It was written in 1998, October 9, on a Friday evening (no, not my memory's sharpness is the reason for remembering:)...it was indicated above the poem itself). No one have ever read it before. You have the privilege to see it first.:)
In 1998 I was 16. 12 years passed since then...so unbelievable.
Universally, reading it with a stranger's eye, the poem may hold three meanings, can be interpreted in three ways. Romantic love, missing family members and searching for God. Or a mixture of these. What do you think? First look at the poem then see the explanation. :)

Távolságok
--
Óceán partján ültem a minap én,
--
Lombok közt ültem a minap én,
Hulltak a falevelek, ősz volt már rég.
Át-átkukucskált egy napsugár az ágakon,
Fel-felnéztem, s csodálat ült ki arcomon.
A távolság igen nagy közte és énköztem,
De nem legyőzhetetlen.
--
Fehér orom csúcsán ültem a minap én,
Kémleltem a teret, nyújtottam a kezet,
--
Síkság közepén ültem a minap én,
A Nap lement, s közelgett a fekete éj.
--
De kisütött a Nap
S felderült a szivárvány fénye,
A magány elillant,
A szivárvány ránk nevet, ott fenn, a derüs égen.
*************************************************************
Originally this poem has nothing to do with romantic feelings: it was mainly written about missing my sisters (in the 4th stanza: "Néztem, néztem az eget, s mi az előbb még ott volt, már nem láttam többé azt a picinyke foltot", picinyke folt refers to an airplane), but it also holds symbolic, religious meanings. In one sentence: it's about distances, in the mirror of seasons.
Sorry for those who couldn't understand it, one day I'll translate it...:)
Those who understood: hope you liked it.

Pre-Christmas and Christmas time

Our visit to the Vörösmarty square was the first station of our traditional pre-Christmas celebration.

Here we saw...

traditional hand-made stuff

and traditional hand-made mugs(these were my favourite ones...aren't they cute?)
and here we smelled traditional cinnamon-orange hangers and decorations
(each of them smelling like Christmas itself)and met food that lookedand even smelled like food from the traditional Hungarian Christmas Eve menue (though I must admit: there were a few things I will never ever wish to try...for example, see the leftmost big bowl? Guess what it hid! Any ideas?I'll help you: the lower parts of hundreds of cocks...)
later on we also listened to traditional Christmas music in a non-traditional way: it was performed by a group of talented polar bears!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Then pre-Christmas snow arrived and filled our garden with whiteness, and our hearts with happiness.
it covered the evergreen trees with everlasting lightness (at least, I wished to experience its eternal nature)
and our outdoor Christmas tree which can be seen from my window
(honestly, it is almost the only thing I can see from there)(this reminds me of a symbol: the Cross with the Lamb on it)it covered the bushesand the berries
(wonder how they were able to survive the first half of winter...crazy plants do we have, no doubt about that...)
and the garden swing, where we usually sit during hot and sultry summer months and our car
snow ruled our garden as it covered each and every corner,
everything
and everybody:)
and every bodypart
it almost covered me totally and irrevocably
as I was trying to take a photo in the snow
and during the action, I suddenly began sinking...
But hey, wait a minute! I thought I was supposed to be covered only almost!
This doesn't seem almost, this seems irrevocably!
See? Nothing remained of me.
No traces, no signs, nothing. Just crystal-like and blinding snow....
and a little white house in the middle of an even whiter whiteness.
Without any witness. What a happiness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The clear pre-Christmas whiteness dressed our garden in Christmas wear, still, a few days later but before Christmas Eve unfortunately all the snow melted away. However, this was the point when Christmas left our garden and stepped into our house. Leaving all the cold whiteness outside, and bringing colours and warmth inside.

It brought a Christmas-tree
and Christmas presentsespecially hand-made ones for Mom
for Dad
and even for Zsolti.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And when we ate up all the eatable parts of our Christmas presents, we turned to our Christmas cakes:
to the chocolate-almond cake
to the cottage-cheese, blueberry and peach cake (mostly made by me)
and finally, to the poppy-seed cake, which, you Americans all know, is the biggest Hungarian drug ever on Earth...thus there is a high risk to become addicted to it.
Not only almost. Irrevocably. :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Originally, 2009 wasn't one of my favourite numbers...still, the several great and adventurous events that have happened to me and my family during this past year's months all contributed to looking back to it with good memories and joy.
Looking forward to 2010 with the same hopes!

Illatszerboltban: samponok többszörös ledöntögetése, hatalmas csattanással durr le a földre, mindeközben összes eladó a közelben.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
V-É-G-E
Már csak egyet alszunk és itt van a Karácsony, örömteljes -és sérülésmentes- készülődést kívánok mindenkinek!:)
First Advent Candle of 2009
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A few thoughts I've found what Advent may mean

"Advent is concerned with that very connection between memory and hope which is so necessary to man. Advent’s intention is to awaken the most profound and basic emotional memory within us, namely, the memory of the God who became a child. This is a healing memory; it brings hope. The purpose of the Church’s year is continually to rehearse her great history of memories, to awaken the heart’s memory so that it can discern the star of hope.
It is the beautiful task of Advent to awaken in all of us memories of goodness and thus to open doors of hope." (Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger)

"Each year, God asks us to shed one more coat of awareness, one more dream state and come alive to the vision of God’s plan for each of us and the world-at-large. The older we get, the harder this is to do. As children we had a sense of wonder. Our eyes were wide open and drinking in the fascinating gifts we beheld…Our thirsty souls could not have enough of the wonders of creation.Then, somehow, we grew too old to dream. We tired of the abundance of the world, or at least grew weary of keeping up with the feast of life, and stepped away from the banquet of life.
The natural gift of wonder God gave us as children was meant to be kept alive.…Instead we let wonder go to sleep. We entered the typical dream state of most humans. Why else does Jesus tell us today, ‘Stay awake!’…Advent says, ‘Wake up and realize the gifts of love you have received.' " (Rev. Alfred McBride, O. Praem)

"Life is a constant Advent season: we are continually waiting to become, to discover, to complete, to fulfill. Hope, struggle, fear, expectation and fulfillment are all part of our Advent experience." (CONNECTIONS, 11-28-93)

"May this Advent season be a time for bringing hope, transformation and fulfillment into the Advent of our lives." (CONNECTIONS, 11-28-93)

Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day

When we were farmers
We hauled in the harvest
And founded Thanksgiving Day.
With food in the shed
For the winter ahead
We would gather together to say--
Thanks for our health
Thanks for our hearth
And the bounty that grows from the ground.
With our loved ones near
We bless the year
That’s brought us safely ‘round.

Now we are shoppers.
We drive to the market.
The farm seems a lightyear away.
Still, every November
We pause to remember
That time-honored, old-fashioned day.
Thanks for our health
Thanks for our hearth
And the bounty that grows from the ground.
With our loved ones near
We bless the year
That’s brought us safely ‘round.

Everything changes,
Yes, even Thanksgiving.
Let’s rededicate this old day
To helping the hungry,
The poor and the homeless
So all may be able to say—
Thanks for our health
Thanks for our hearth
And the bounty that grows from the ground.
With our loved ones near
We bless the year
That’s brought us safely ‘round.
(John Forster and Tom Chapin: Thanksgiving Day)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Instead the refrain: 'With our loved ones near, We bless the year, That's brought us safely 'round
I would rather say: With our loved ones far, God bless us all, To have a safe new year.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have a Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Moments from the Cemetery

A few weeks ago on a cool but sunny, colourful October day I spent half a day in Budapest's most famous cemetery and took a few (approximately 150...) photos, mainly focusing on old but fine statues. Here are my favourite ones.

Note: During the photo-taking acts the Sun was shining very intensely. This might be visible in the pictures as well...
I think I will repeat my walk there one 'sunless' day. :)

My sweet little nieces

Here are some pictures freshly taken of my two little baby-nieces, Natalia and Ariana.
This is how Natalia looks like presently with her two little teeth in the front.
She is almost one year old.

And this is Ariana at the age of 4 months, already teething.

How much have they grown in the past few months and how nice smiles do they 'produce'!
Aren't they extremely cute? :)

P.S. Sorry Caleb for leaving you out this time, but today it's the 'girls' day'. :) I'll compensate, I promise. Surely, one day in the future. :)

It is supposed to be Halloween today...

...somewhere over the rainbow, and maybe in other parts of the world as well -but not here in Hungary.
I know that public opinion is strongly divided into two sides regarding the judgment of Halloween. Some of you like it, some of you don't. Probably you all loved it when you were children, but you grew out of this loving as soon as you became an adult. Now, I'm supposed to be an adult, but I still like Halloween. Then, how is this?!
Well, given that I've been liking both chocolate and spooky things from the earliest years of my existence, and Halloween is obviously the combination of these two, I have very good childhood memories in connection with this 'holiday'. Furthermore, I never ever experienced Halloween in my adult life. Probably this 'non-encounter' with Halloween allowed me to still look at this day with the eye of a child. Maybe, if I met this 'celebration' today, with an adult's mind, I could more or less move myself away from childhood memories and could observe it with an adult's eye that could possibly change opinions and viewpoints in me.

Maybe I wouldn't like it any more.
Maybe I still would.
However, I shall continue to love it as a child, who doesn't yet see its wrong side, only perceives the good. That is the reason I might never meet Halloween in my adult life face to face (though I wanted to...). To keep my childhood memories nice and pure.
Due to this philosophy, my adult side says it is not that bad that we don't have Halloween in Hungary. Though my childish self cries for pumpkins, chocolate and sweets, 'trick or treat'-s, spooky things...
Time to grow up. Or not. ;)
'Happy' Halloween!

P.S. Strictly to kids under 10 (mainly Caleb):

Preparing myself for Halloween...

I wanted to write about some of my new experiences and upload beautiful autumn pictures taken in the woods, but a few happenings intervened and inhibited me from doing that.
No. 1 happening: there must be some problem with my computer because last time when I wanted to download pictures from my SD card, it deleted ALL the pictures...and I nearly went crazy. They were really GREAT pictures. :( Since that moment I do not dare to use the SD card downloader part of the laptop.
No. 2 happening: the weather is cooler nowadays, so my outgoings -and thus my photo-taking acts- significantly dicreased compared to earlier and hotter periods of the year...and even when I went out to take autumn pictures, these photos ceased to exist (see No 1. happening).
No. 3 happening: a few days ago I had an operation so I really did not have the time and/or energy to write. No worry, it was not a big one, it only lasted approximately for half an hour. During the operation an atheroma was taken out of...yeah, of my head (though only affecting the surface area of it, fortunately not my precious brain:)). I don't want to shock you with all the details. Neither verbally with detailed descriptions, nor virtually with disgusting pictures. Okay, to tell the truth, I would love to shock you but I'm afraid then you would not come here any more....and...by the way...Mom told me NOT to even attempt to upload any of these kind of photos at this time (though I have taken a few...). Okay, I obey, no photos this time. Maybe next time;) Pssssssst;)

And why the title 'Preparing myself for Halloween' ? Well, imagine how I look like at the moment. Two days ago some hair was shaved off my head. Horroristic. Then, after the take-out of this small, ball-like atheroma, a bleeding hole was left in my headskin which was succesfully sewed together but to promote healing, a big white antiseptic gauze was also sewed on it. Even more horroristic. This thing soon became a little bit bloody. And it is still so and still there. It is becoming one of my bodyparts. The most horroristic.
Therefore, now I usually wear a little cap so when I go out or meet other people, I don't scare them to death with my Frankenstein appearance. (Though Frankenstein would say: "this is not scary enough". But who cares about his opinion?!).
So this is how I succeeded to literally prepare myself to this year's Halloween.
Very unconscious. Very natural.Very scary. And thus very effective.
At least, would be effective -in the States. To my greatest despair, here in Hungary I cannot harness these 'Halloween virtues' such as fearsome, bloody appearance.
Poor me. But lucky Hungarians!

'Summer stories' series: In and Around Budapest

Besides being on longer tours (as seen in the previous posts) we also enjoyed going on smaller excursions in and around the city.

P.S. Since we started our summer vacation in the middle of August, these excursions were elongated to warmer September and October days...and they would still last if the weather would be good enough for that...but it isn't. Imagine, in only 5 days the temperature fell from 28 Celsius degrees to 4-5 degrees. And that's a HUGE difference.
So all kinds of excursions from now on will be postponed to whoknowswhen.
And if we don't want to become froze-bitten, we'll rather have to stay inside in the company of a big mug of tea or hot chocolate.
At least until the temperature rises a bit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our 2009 'Hungarian vacation' started on the 6th of August, when we went to Szentendre to celebrate Mom's birthday
These flowers are the survivors of the cooler autumn temperature, still, they are beautiful

In September, we went to see the free (the emphasis is on this:)), so called Face Poster exhibition at Felvonulási tér (it is somewhere between the Heroes Square and the City Park). It is held annually, always having different themes. This year we saw pictures and photos in connection with the World Economic Crisis and advertisements about the importance of pure water. It wasn't bad altogether, though last year I liked it a little more...
Still, I collected a few of my favourites to share with you.

We also spent days with Budapest sightseeing (walking) tours...(what we often do anyway, but taking photos in and about Budapest never becomes boring)

One day we even became children and went to Hűvösvölgy by the children's railway (the name mainly comes from an old tradition, according to which not adults, but children work on these trains as ticket inspectors).
And recently we went to Robert Capa war photographer's exhibition to the Művészetek Palotája (if you didn't know: he had Hungarian origins and was born as Friedmann Endre).
The information heard of his life and his displayed photos were very interesting, and the building itself was wondrous!
And that's it. This was our 2009 Summer in pictures.
NOW you may ask what we will do NOW, that the summer is over. Well, NOW we are waiting for some global warming to be able to go outside again and continue...no, not our summer, but rather our autumn vacation...global warming, please, be so kind and COME! :)
